Provide love, attention, exercise, and enrichment to the dogs in the shelter. This can be done by taking dogs on a walk around NHS premises or "mall walking" through approved NHS facility areas, utilizing court yards and the Real Life room for enrichment when weather does not allow for outdoor walking.
Housekeeping:
- Only volunteers 18+ are permitted to handle dogs
- To be eligible for this program, you must complete our in-person dog walking training
- If you are NOT Blue Dot Dog Certified you may NOT walk Blue Dot Dogs *
The above rules are in place to protect yourself and our shelter pets. Inability to follow rules or interact with shelter animals appropriately may result in termination of your volunteer status.
*To become a blue dot dog walker- you need a minimum of 1000 NHS dog walking volunteer hours, and you need to have been identified by Emily Lancione (Animal Care Director) as a potential new team member. Emily will evaluate your dog handling skills and if you are selected, you will be admitted to the Blue Dot Mentor program.
